Understanding the Materials Used in Desiccants

Moisture in any area can ruin the shelf life of a product or possibly lead to damage caused by mold, fungus, and bacteria. This is why it’s essential to remove it from all kinds of products. A desiccant is a drying agent that can bind gas or water physically or chemically, extracting it from various materials.

Due to their flexible and small nature, desiccants are integrated into canisters, sachets, cards, bottles, and various other products.

Some of the most common desiccants consist of silica gel, activated charcoal, charcoal sulfate, molecular sieves, activated alumina, calcium chloride, and montmorillonite clay.

Montmorillonite Clay

Montmorillonite clay is made up of clay that contains high magnesium aluminum silicate content and is best for temperatures below or near room temperature. Since it’s inexpensive, it’s useful for industrial use.

Molecular Sieves

Molecular sieves are synthetic desiccants made from aluminosilicates and are known to have many pores or holes to absorb water or gas. These desiccants are commonly used as reagents and bio-chemicals for pharmaceutical companies.

Activated Alumina

Activated alumina is a porous desiccant that is made of aluminum hydroxide. It has a high absorption ability that makes it useful for drying gases, filtering drinking water, fluoride absorption, and biomaterial.

The absorption process involves water sticking to the alumina itself, trapping it to prevent it from spreading over the surface area and passing through any filter.

Calcium Sulfate

Calcium sulfate is a non-toxic, non-corrosive desiccant made of dehydrated gypsum with a low absorption ability, making it a lesser-used desiccant with a short useful life.

Silica Gel

Silica gel is a desiccant made up of small beads of silicon dioxide. Due to its non-toxic and non-corrosive nature, it’s commonly used in food and medicines to absorb moisture and prolong the shelf life of a product.

Moreover, desiccants come in a broad spectrum of shapes and sizes that range from encased silica gel beads to perforated canisters of silica gel.

Calcium Oxide

Calcium oxide, commonly known as quicklime, is an alkaline used to drop the humidity below a certain point, absorbing most of the moisture within an enclosed space. It is used to package dehydrated foods because it swells when it absorbs moisture, making it take up more space than other desiccants.
